Building Strength and Confidence Through Adaptive Exercise ๐Ÿ’™

At Headway Sussex, we see every day how the right support can transform livesย ๐Ÿ’™

Every Wednesday, our Newick Hub comes alive with energy, laughter and determination, thanks to Rozz, our exercise specialist, who generously volunteers her time to lead our adapted exercise class. Her sessions are more than just movement, they are a vital part of our clientsโ€™ rehabilitation and wellbeing.

For people living with brain injury, exercise is not simply about physical fitness. Brain injury can affect balance, coordination, strength, fatigue levels, memory, and even confidence in everyday movement. Many individuals also experience reduced mobility or anxiety around gym-based exercises, which can make traditional fitness environments feel inaccessible.

That is where adapted exercise becomes so powerful.

By removing the pressure to stand, adapting exercises to personal needs creates a safe, inclusive space where everyone can participate, regardless of their physical ability. This reduces the risk of injury while allowing clients to focus on controlled, purposeful movements. These movements help to rebuild strength, improve circulation, and support joint mobility, all of which are essential for maintaining independence.

But the benefits go even deeper.

Exercise plays a significant role in supporting the brain itself. Repetitive, guided movements can help strengthen neural pathways, supporting neuroplasticity, the brainโ€™s ability to adapt and rewire after injury. For our clients, this can mean improvements in coordination, reaction time, and even cognitive function over time.

There is also a strong emotional impact. Living with a brain injury can often lead to feelings of isolation, frustration, or loss of identity. Rozzโ€™s classes provide a welcoming and social environment where clients can reconnect with their bodies, build confidence, and share achievements, no matter how small they may seem.

We regularly see clients leave sessions feeling more energised, more positive, and more connected. For some, it is the highlight of their week.

Rozzโ€™s dedication, warmth and encouragement make all the difference. By giving her time, she is helping individuals rebuild not just physical strength, but confidence, independence, and hope.

We are incredibly grateful to Rozz for everything she brings to our Newick Hub, and to all our volunteers who help make these life changing moments possible.

If you would like to support sessions like these, or find out more about volunteering with Headway Sussex, we would love to hear from you.

Together, we can keep the doors openย ๐Ÿ’™

Best Wishes
