πŸ’™ June is Aphasia Awareness Month πŸ’™

Dear Supporter,

This month, Headway Sussex is proud to support Aphasia Awareness Month and help raise understanding of a condition that affects many people living with brain injury and stroke.

Aphasia is a communication difficulty caused by damage to the brain. It can affect a person’s ability to speak, understand language, read, write, or use numbers. Importantly, aphasia does not affect intelligence, although it can make communicating thoughts, needs, and feelings much more challenging.

Many of the people we support at Headway Sussex experience communication difficulties following a brain injury. Everyday tasks that many of us take for granted, such as finding the right words, following a conversation, reading information, or expressing an opinion, can become frustrating and exhausting.

These challenges can often lead to isolation, reduced confidence, and difficulties maintaining relationships, employment, and independence.

By increasing awareness and understanding of aphasia, we can all help create more inclusive and supportive communities.

There are simple ways everyone can make a difference:

πŸ’™ Give people extra time to communicate
πŸ’™ Reduce distractions during conversations
πŸ’™ Use clear and straightforward language
πŸ’™ Listen patiently and avoid finishing sentences for someone
πŸ’™ Remember that communication difficulties do not reflect a person’s intelligence

A little patience and understanding can have a significant impact on someone’s confidence and ability to participate in everyday life.

This June, we invite you to join us in helping make Sussex a more aphasia-aware place for everyone affected by brain injury, stroke, and other neurological conditions.

Thank you for your continued support.

Best wishes,

The Headway Sussex Team πŸ’™
