New Guide on Language for Mental Health

Language has the power to shape experiences — it can make someone feel understood and valued, or it can leave them feeling alienated and unheard. Understanding the impact of the words we use is particularly important when supporting people with mental health challenges or brain injuries.

That’s why Sussex Health and Care has launched ‘Changing the language: a guide to language for mental health’, a new resource designed to encourage more thoughtful and supportive communication. This guide has been coproduced with individuals who have a passion for creating positive change and improving the way we talk about mental health.

Why Language Matters

The words we choose can either validate someone’s experiences or make them feel isolated. In healthcare settings, language plays a crucial role in building trust, encouraging open dialogue, and ensuring people feel respected and heard. Misunderstandings or careless language can have unintended consequences, potentially causing distress or disengagement from support.

This guide is not about imposing rules — it’s about encouraging reflection and discussion. It invites us all to consider how the language we use affects others and to recognise the diverse ways people experience and talk about mental health.

How the Guide Can Be Used

The guide is a valuable tool that can be used in various settings, including:
✅ Conversations with colleagues, clients, and families
✅ Team meetings and training sessions
✅ Personal reflection to deepen understanding

By encouraging more thoughtful language, the guide aims to foster a culture of understanding and inclusion — one where everyone feels valued and supported.

Access the Guide

We encourage everyone involved in mental health support, healthcare, and community work to explore this guide and consider how it can influence their communication. Small changes in the words we use can make a big difference in someone’s experience.
